Washington is studying the financial implications of Greenland's possible annexation to the United States, estimating the cost of maintaining the island and providing services to its 58,000 residents. President Donald Trump had previously stated that Greenland would «one way or another» be under US control, promising its population economic benefits in case of integration. The White House administration is analyzing the costs and potential revenues from Greenland's natural resources. Washington is ready to offer the island conditions more favorable than Denmark, which annually allocates about $ 600 million for its financing. The White House is discussing how cost-effective it is to maintain Greenland, and it is considered as a realistic option for territorial expansion, unlike Canada or the Panama Canal. Nevertheless, the project is not a priority for the national security of the United States and is considered rather as an additional opportunity. It is noteworthy that the idea of joining Greenland does not find support among its population and local parties. Since 2009, the island has remained part of the Kingdom of Denmark, enjoying broad autonomy.
