The US court has blocked Trump's duties, but the White House can find a workaround

The court's decision in the United States, which declared illegal some of the duties imposed by the administration of Donald Trump, will be a temporary obstacle to his trade strategy. Analysts believe that the suspension will affect about 6.7% of customs duties, but the White House will surely compensate for these losses with other tariff measures. In their opinion, this will not affect the outcome of disputes with key US trading partners.

One of the options may be to use article 232 of the Law on Trade Expansion. This mechanism has already been used to impose duties on steel, aluminum and the automotive industry in March, and allows for an increase in the total fee by 7.6 percentage points, which compensates for lost revenue.

The US Federal Court argued its decision was an excess of presidential powers. Both new tariffs covering products from 185 countries and import duties from Canada, China and Mexico were blocked. However, the restrictions did not affect tariffs on steel, aluminum, cars and their spare parts.
