China has planned to build the world's most powerful hydroelectric power plant in southern Tibet, state media reported. The government has approved a dam project on the Yarlung Tsangpo River, which flows through the Xinjiang Autonomous Region. According to forecasts, the new HPP will produce about 300 billion kWh of electricity per year, which will allow it to overtake the famous «Three Gorges» hydroelectric power station in terms of capacity. In addition, this project is important for the implementation of China's strategy to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality, as well as to combat global climate change. Beijing plans to spend more than 1 trillion yuan (about $137 billion) on the construction of the new hydroelectric power plant, which will make it the largest infrastructure project in the world today.
