US President-elect Donald Trump plans to buy Greenland, which will be the largest territorial acquisition in the country's history, surpassing the purchase of Louisiana in 1803. Trump raised the idea again, announcing PayPal co-founder Ken Khouri as his candidate for the post of U.S. ambassador to Denmark, which has controlled Greenland for more than 300 years. Greenland's area (836,330 square miles) exceeds the territory purchased with Louisiana, and is significantly larger than Alaska or Texas, annexed in the 19th century. Trump expressed interest in buying the island due to its strategic location and infrastructure back in 2019. In the last year of his first term, the Trump administration studied this issue in more detail, but the initiative was not continued. «The United States believes that owning Greenland is necessary for national security and freedom,» Trump said. The key to the deal, according to the president-elect's team, will be convincing the people of Greenland, whose economy is heavily dependent on Danish grants, which account for 20% of the island's GDP. It is assumed that Greenland will retain self-government, and a referendum on this issue will be ratified by the Danish Parliament. However, Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede has already stated: «Greenland belongs to us. We are not for sale and we will never be sold.» In addition, Trump expressed his intention to return the Panama Canal, which was transferred to Panama in 1979, due to high duties and the risk of Chinese influence.
