Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics proposed to close the Baltic Sea to all Russian ships if the investigation of the incident with the damage to the Balticconnector gas pipeline confirms Russia's involvement in this event.
Balticconnector is a gas pipeline connecting Finland and Estonia, and providing the former with access to an underground gas storage facility in Latvia.
The President said that the incident with the damage to the gas pipeline is being discussed with the Presidents of Estonia and Finland, and all participants in the meetings are in favor of strengthening NATO patrols in the region. Rinkevics stressed that the decision to close the Baltic Sea to Russian vessels will be made only after receiving concrete results of the investigation.
The incident with the damage to the gas pipeline occurred on October 8, when the pressure in the Balticconnector pipe decreased and the gas supply was cut off. The Finnish authorities discovered the leak site and assumed that the damage was caused intentionally. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
