According to the preliminary assessment of the Statistical Office of the European Union, consumer prices in the eurozone increased by 4.3% in annual terms in September. Thus, inflation slowed down from 5.2% in August. Analysts' consensus forecast suggested a slowdown to 4.5%. In particular, energy prices in September decreased by 4.7% YoY after falling by 3.3% in August. The growth of prices for food, alcohol and tobacco products slowed from 9.7% to 8.8%, for services – from 5.5% to 4.7%. Core inflation (CPI Core index – price growth excluding the cost of food and energy) in September slowed to the lowest since August 2022 4.5% (from 5.3% a month earlier). Analysts had expected a rise of 4.8%. On a monthly basis, consumer prices in September increased by 0.3% compared to August – then they increased by 0.5%.
