In the UK, for the first time, wind turbines have bypassed gas-fired power plants and become the leading source of electricity. However, the country is still far from fulfilling its ambitious plans to create an environmentally friendly energy system by 2030. According to the National Energy System Operator, wind farms accounted for 29% of all electricity generated last year, while the share of gas decreased to 25%. The UK intends to triple its wind power capacity in the coming years, especially offshore. This should help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and reduce energy bills for consumers, making renewable sources the backbone of the energy system by the beginning of the next decade.
