В то время как основным событием на повестке дня остается тема урагана «Харви» и его разрушительных последствий для экономики США, Дональд Трамп в своих социальных сетях уделил немало внимания взаимоотношениям с южным соседом – Мексикой. Негативные комментарии президента США в его Твиттере буквально молниеносно обрушили мексиканскую валюту до отметки 17,67 после укрепления песо до 17,58. 

Падение курса валюты было вызвано отрицательным отношением Трампа к участию в Североамериканском соглашении о свободной торговле с Мексикой и Канадой, а также непоколебимыми намерениями США завершить строительство стены между двумя странами. Президент США назвал NAFTA «худшей в истории торговой сделкой». 

Помимо этого, Дональд Трамп охарактеризовал Мексику как одну из стран с самым высоким уровнем преступности в мире, добавив, что наличие стены между США и Мексикой – это вопрос первой необходимости. Причем глава Соединенных Штатов уверен, что именно Мексика должна заплатить за воздвижение стены, посредством возмещения или другим способом. Мексиканские власти в корне не согласны со взглядами Трампа, заявив, что не намерены платить за строительство стены ни в каком виде.
