Meta has bolstered its position in the race for developer tools by acquiring Conductor, a startup whose app lets users run multiple AI agents simultaneously to write and test code.

Axios first reported the deal on November 4, and Meta has confirmed the acquisition, though financial terms remain undisclosed. Analysts note that control of coding tools is becoming a strategic priority for AI giants, and Meta clearly wants to keep pace.

Conductor CEO Charlie Holtz greeted the news enthusiastically: in a post on X, he said the team is joining Meta and has "big, crazy plans for the next interface." Holtz added that the group will work inside Meta Superintelligence Labs alongside Nat Friedman and Alexander Wang, calling the lab one of the most talented.

According to TechCrunch, Conductor users will see "something new" early next year. Axios sources say Meta plans to leverage the team's rapid product development to build the next generation of AI programming tools.

According to The Verge, Conductor Cloud will be switched to read-only on November 13, and the cloud service will be fully shut down on November 20. After that, user data deletion will begin, and refunds will be issued to active subscribers.

Conductor's local macOS app will continue to receive model updates and critical bug fixes through early 2027. The company emphasizes that user data has never been sold or used to train models.

Founded in 2024 by Holtz and CTO Jackson de Campos, Conductor provides each AI agent with an isolated copy of a codebase, helps developers verify agents' outputs, and then safely merges validated changes into the main code. The platform supports third-party agents such as Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex. In March, the startup raised $22 million in a Series A led by Spark Capital and Matrix, and the service counted more than 100,000 users, including engineers at Meta, Google, and Spotify.

The acquisition fits a broader strategic push at Meta. In August, the company launched a developer agent, Muse Code, and it has been building tools to make programmers more productive for several months. Other players are active as well: the same day, Meta announced the Conductor deal, and OpenAI revealed plans to acquire Pierre Computer, another developer-tool startup.

Meta frames the future of AI programming around "making it easier for developers to manage armies" of agents, in other words, enabling scalable coordination of many autonomous assistants to accelerate software development.
