Google will invest billions in Africa to develop AI and the Internet

Google, part of Alphabet, has announced massive investments in Africa: the company will build four new infrastructure hubs that will connect its latest submarine cables to different regions of the continent – north, south, west and east. 

These centers will include key telecommunications infrastructure – ground stations and data centers, and will form the basis for further development of digital services.

Alex Okosi, Managing Director of Google Africa, emphasized that Africa has great potential in the field of artificial intelligence and digital technologies. The company has already exceeded the $1 billion investment volume promised in 2021 and is ready to go further. In 2025, Google intends to complete the laying of two new underwater cables, Equiano and Umoja, which will provide a more stable and faster connection for millions of users.

Currently, the Internet on the continent remains expensive and unstable, and interruptions often occur due to damage to underwater cables. The new infrastructure should not only reduce the cost of access to broadband services, but also expand opportunities for cooperation with regional telecom operators, including MTN Group and Vodacom.
