EU urges US to engage in dialogue, responding to Trump's threats about tariffs

The EU, reacting to the statements of US President Donald Trump, called on Washington to open a dialogue on trade, emphasizing the importance of cooperation instead of confrontation. European Commission representative Olof Gilles noted that the EU is committed to a partnership based on transparency and fair rules that benefits citizens and businesses.

The European Commission recalled that the volume of annual transatlantic trade is $1.5 trillion. American companies have made significant profits due to access to the single European market, which stimulates economic development. These relations represent the largest bilateral trade and investment cooperation in the world.

Brussels stressed that in case of attempts to introduce unjustified barriers, the EU will react harshly and promptly, protecting the interests of its enterprises, workers and consumers from unfair duties. 

Earlier, Trump announced plans to impose 25% duties on European goods, including cars, accusing the EU of unfair trade policies and hostility towards the United States.
